Wolfgang Amadé Mozart - The Compleat Mozart (Neal Zaslaw)

Appendix B

Selected bibliography

The literature on Mozart is vast, amounting to tens of thousands of books, articles, reviews, and program notes in dozens of languages. The only other composers who have inspired anything like this outpouring of verbiage are Bach, Beethoven, and Wagner.

The list that follows has been selected for its usefulness to non-specialists and to fulfill two functions: the first is to identify the classics of Mozart scholarship, the books to which writers on Mozart constantly refer. In this way readers of The Compleat Mozart will know what is meant when the authors of our essays refer to the opinions of Abert, Deutsch, Einstein, Jahn, Köchel, Nissen, or Wyzewa and Saint-Foix, and can pursue their works further if they wish.

The second function is to provide the titles of several recent, non-technical, general books about Mozart in English that are, in the opinion of the undersigned, interesting, worthwhile, innovative, or important. By listing them I do not necessarily endorse everything in them. Rather, I hope to provide the reader with quick access to some of the latest thinking in Mozart research.

The cutting edge of research in this field, as in many others, is not primarily found in books, but in articles in specialist journals. The most important of these periodicals can be identified by referring to the extensive classified bibliography appended to the Mozart article in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, edited by Stanley Sadie (London: Macmillan, 1980), which is also separately available, updated, in paperback as The New Grove Mozart (see below under Sadie).
